Your Heater Could Face These 3 Major Problems Right Now

It’s already spring, and temperatures are warming up with each passing day. While you still may be running your heater, heater problems are probably the last thing on your mind. Instead, you’re probably more concerned with how your AC will work for the coming summer months.

But, there is still a good chance that you could need heating repair in Staten Island, NY. Your heater has been working hard all season long to keep your home warm, and there’s a good chance that it has taken on some significant wear and tear in the process. Now is a great time to address these three heating problems before they cause more troubles down the line.

Furnace Won’t Turn On

It’s common for furnaces to have problems turning on. Of course, this can be a major problem when you want to heat your home. The good news is, this is usually a problem with your thermostat and not with your heater itself. Your thermostat has to measure the temperature in your home and signal when your heater should turn on and off based on your selected heat settings.

If your thermostat is miscalibrated, low on batteries, or dirty, it may not signal your heater as it should. Our team can help with any of these problems. In rare cases, we do have to replace the thermostat, but that may be an opportunity to upgrade your thermostat to a more energy efficient option.

Furnace Turning On and Off

Other times, your furnace turns on, but then turns off again quickly. This is also referred to as short-cycling. It is a problem because your heater is turning on and off frequently instead of lasting long enough to heat up your home. This could also be a problem with your thermostat, but sometimes the issue lies within your heater.

If your heater is not getting enough incoming airflow, it may be shutting off as a safety response. This is common if your air filter is clogged or there’s another blockage somewhere in the system. You can try changing your air filter, but if that doesn’t work then you need to give us a call to check out your heater and see what is going on.

Furnace Making Loud Noises

Another problem that is common at the end of the heating season is for your furnace to make loud sounds. Any unusual sounds are concerning, but some are more concerning than others. If you hear a loud boom when your furnace first turns on, this is a sign that there is too much gas in the combustion chamber building up.

When your furnace releases too much gas, a mini explosion happens when the pilot light finally ignites. This can put a lot of strain on your furnace and increases the chances of a furnace breakdown. If the heat exchanger on your furnace cracks, the entire system needs to be replaced.
