First, let’s take a closer look at why your AC isn’t giving you the cooling you want.
Do you use a heat pump for cooling?
If your air conditioner is actually a heat pump—i.e. you can change it to work as a heater during the winter—then the problem might be as simple as a mistake with the thermostat setting that hasn’t turned it over to cooling mode yet. If the from the vents air is actually hot, not just room temperature, you may have a problem with the heat pump’s reverse valve, and this requires professionals to fix.
Check for a clogged air filter in the HVAC cabinet
This is a common reason for an air conditioner that isn’t providing cooling. The HVAC filter protects the interior of the cabinet from dust and lint that might get into the blower assembly or the air conditioner coils. If debris builds up too heavily on the filter, it will choke off the air and the AC will not receive enough air to cool down. Change the filter if it’s clogged—and remember to change it regularly around the year. (Once every 1 to 3 months is recommended.)
Refrigerant Leaks
Ideally, and air conditioner should use the same charge of refrigerant for its entire service life. But corrosion along the copper of the refrigerant lines and coils can allow the chemical refrigerant to escape. When this happens, the cooling power will start to drop for the AC. You must have professionals handle this problem, because they have to locate the leaks, seal them, and recharge the refrigerant. Failure to address a drop in refrigerant can eventually lead to a broken compressor.
Miscalibrated thermostat / lost thermostat connection
The thermostat may have a malfunction that’s causing it to incorrectly gauge temperatures in the house. If the thermostat is picking up false readings, it will not activate the compressor to start providing cooling. Repair experts can easily recalibrate the thermostat.
The issue may be deeper, however: a thermostat that has lost its connection to the compressor, so no matter what you do with the settings, the AC won’t start cooling. Technicians may recommend replacing the thermostat.
Leaking air ducts
If you find that some vents are sending out cool air while other are not, one possibility is that there are air leaks in the ducts to those vents. The cold air is escaping and not making it to the room. HVAC technicians will locate these leaks and use special techniques to seal them.
