4 Early Signs of Boiler Problems

Boilers are well known for being reliable heating systems. However, any problems that arise with your boiler are serious and need to be treated as such. The best way to prevent boiler problems is by taking care of your system through both maintenance steps of your own and professional care.

But even then, some problems are inevitable. You can keep reading to learn about four of the early signs that can indicate operation problems with your boiler. When you notice these signs or anything else out of the ordinary, give our team a call to schedule boiler repair in Staten Island, NY. It’s the best way to stay ahead of a total breakdown or much more expensive repair.

1. Leaks

Leaks are never okay when it comes to your boiler. It can be easy to think that a minor drip here or there isn’t a big deal. Unfortunately, air is getting into the system as water is leaking out. This can affect pressure and increase the likelihood of corrosion.

2. Inconsistent Heat

You should have consistent heat throughout your home with a boiler in place. If some rooms aren’t as warm or it seems like your boiler can’t keep up with heating your home, we need to check out the system. Pressure may be off or the system may need to be flushed. If you have hard water with high mineral content, that can contribute to issues with inconsistent heat.

3. Fluctuating Cycles

Your boiler should have predictable cycles. If it begins to stay on for a long period of time without taking a break, something is wrong. The same thing goes if your boiler is turning on and off constantly or not turning on at all.

It is important to note that sometimes your thermostat can be to blame instead of your boiler. If the attached thermostat is incorrectly calibrated, it can signal for the boiler to operate inefficiently. No matter what the issue, we can get to the bottom of it and fix either your thermostat or your boiler.

4. Unusual Sounds or Smells

After having a boiler in place for a while, you should be pretty familiar with sounds that are normal. For example, you may hear the boiler click a few times before starting up for a heating cycle. Hearing persistent clicking is a red flag, though. Other examples of concerning sounds include:

  • Whirring or humming
  • Thumping or rumbling
  • Hissing or whistling

These sounds can point to problems like gas leaks, pressure that is too high or too low, or loose parts. No matter how big or small you suspect a problem is, it’s important to call for service and take proactive steps to address issues.

Your boiler shouldn’t produce any bad odors, either. If your gas service provider adds an odor to their natural gas, bad smells can point to a gas leak. Alternately, a bad odor could mean that corrosion is happening inside of the boiler and producing bacteria thanks to air getting in the system.
