This Is How Much Water (and Money) a Leaky Faucet Wastes

plumber-at-kitchen-sink

If a faucet in your home has a small leak, you may not think much of it. The drip is not bothering you, and it’s not making that much of a difference on your monthly water bill. At least, that’s what you think. The average leaky faucet produces around ten drips every minute, wasting around one gallon of water per day. It costs you about a dollar per month.

But more significant leaks, like faucets that leak 120 drops per minute, waste more than 11 gallons per day and cost you $6 every month. And that’s just a single leak. If you have one, you may have more. If you need help with your kitchen plumbing in Staten Island, NY, our team is happy to help. We can fix your leaky faucet and help you save a little bit of money every month on your water bill.

Leaky Toilet

Leaks are not exclusive to faucets. If you have a toilet that sounds like it is constantly running, it can use more water than you probably imagine. A running toilet wastes around eight gallons of water every single hour, or 200 gallons per day. Allowing your toilet to run without fixing it can use more than 6,000 gallons of water every month. A small leaky faucet may not cost you much, but a running toilet may cost you as much as $70 each month.

Other Costly Appliances

Leaks aren’t the only thing that cost you money on your monthly water bill. Aside from getting leaky faucets and running toilets fixed, you can also be wise about how you use your appliances and save money on your monthly water bill. Wait until your dishwasher is full to turn it on. Running your dishwasher twice for smaller loads can waste as much as 320 gallons of water per year.

If you prefer to hand-wash your dishes, turn the water off until you need to rinse. Leaving your water running for five minutes while you hand wash-dishes wastes ten gallons. That’s ten gallons for every five minutes that you leave the water running. Instead, organize your dishes so that you have a bowl of soapy water to use, and wash them all before turning the water back on to rinse them off.

If your yard has a sprinkler system, you want to inspect it regularly to make sure it’s not leaking water when you have the system turned off. A broken sprinkler system can waste nearly 2,500 gallons of water per month, and cost you a lot on your monthly water bill.

When you brush your teeth, turn the water off until you need to rinse your toothbrush. Allowing your faucet to run for the couple of minutes when you brush your teeth can waste eight gallons of water each day, or nearly 3000 gallons per year.
