Maintenance Tips for Your Heating System

Our team should be visiting your home twice each year for professional maintenance. But in between those appointments, you can take steps that will make a tremendous difference in how well your heater operates. In fact, how you care for your heater directly impacts energy efficiency and system longevity.

Keep reading to learn our tips for taking care of your heater on a regular basis. If you have any questions about caring for your heater or think you need to schedule an appointment for heater repair in Woodbridge, NJ give our team a call. We are always here to help.

Vacuum and Dust

While this isn’t directly caring for your heater itself, reducing the amount of dust and dirt in your home will go a long way toward helping the system work better. Heaters are especially susceptible to problems due to dust and dirt buildup.

The tiny particles can get into your system, even with a fantastic air filter in place, and interfere with the lubrication that allows heater components to work together seamlessly. Dirt can also negatively affect heating elements and pilot lights to reduce heating ability.

One reason it is so important to dust and vacuum in the wintertime is that you’re home stays closed up against the cold outside. This traps more dust indoors rather than having fresh air circulating in as stale air moves out.

Change the Filter

Of course, it is still essential to have a good air filter in place and change it out on time each month. It is nearly impossible to vacuum and wipe away all of the dust in your home. Your filter serves as a layer of protection to both improve your indoor air quality and protect your heater from these small but mighty particles.

Wipe Down the Inside Cabinet

You can also take steps to care for your heater and get rid of some of the dust that does make its way into the system. Once a month, turn your heater off and allow it to cool down completely. Then open the cabinet and wipe down the inside with a dry cloth to eliminate buildup.

When you do this regularly, you can prevent dust from turning into a grime that is even more difficult to get rid of. Once you’re done wiping down the cabinet, you can turn your heater back on like normal until it’s time to clean it again.

Monitor Operation

Although it is important to schedule annual professional maintenance, it is equally important to pay attention to the signs of problems in between these appointments. Any time you think that something is going wrong with your heater, give us a call to talk about it.

We may be able to offer you ways to troubleshoot on your own, or we can visit your home in between maintenance appointments to address issues and prevent them from worsening.
